.Messaging platform Telegram said on Friday it cannot monitor all accounts it has to check for leaked customer data fromIndia’s Star Health. It will only block content reported to it as a problem.
Ever since Reuters on 20 September reported that a hacker used Telegram chatbots and a website to leak essential customer information, including biometric ID cards and medical claim documents, India’s biggest health insurer has been in the grip of reputation and business crisis.
This came after the High Court received a second similar interim plea last month to expel all Telegram bots trading in the stolen data leakage.Arguing before a hearing on Friday, a lawyer for Telegram said that if the app had to search every chatbot for leaked information out, it would be violating Indian law.The company promises to delete the data if the insurer helps them. The hacker demands a ransom of $68,000 from the insurer if they want to stop the leaks.
Star Health shares have dropped around 11% since the news broke and fell by more than 1% on Friday.
Telegram continues to attract growing attention from users around the globe as its founder Pavel Durov was put under official investigation in France on Aug. 28 for reported illegal use of the app.
Durov and Telegram claim that they have done nothing wrong and are acting to rectify criticism.
The Madras High Court Judge Kumaresh Babu on Friday ordered the social media application to block the bad chatbots and asked the insurance company to furnish more information on it.
Neither Telegram nor Star Health has responded to a request for comment on the hearing. The company claims it is also investigating allegations that its chief security officer had a role in the theft of the data. In this regard, the executive is cooperating with the authorities, and up to now, nothing has been found linking him to the alleged action. The executive said nothing about the allegations.
