WhatsApp’s New Feature Help You Spot Fake Images The app is currently beta testing a feature that allows people to perform quick searches across the internet in order to know whether the images shared in chat are real or not. That would mean WhatsApp can provide beta testers on Android with a possibility of identifying manipulated pictures and those that may cheat people who share them through the application.
Now, with the latest update of the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.23.13, the beta tester can directly open any picture received in the chat and explore the “Search on web” option from the three-dot menu of the media viewer. Following that, the reverse image search from Google will continue to search the internet for pictures that match the same picture or closely resemble it. This would enable them to track if the photo has cropped up anywhere else online, or possibly altered, something that many use in information campaigns.
Though it doesn’t seem to be live yet for some beta testers and probably only part of the rollout, WhatsApp’s new tool could soon make picture verification much easier for its users. The new tool should allow a few simple taps to find the origins of images. It is said to work in reducing the amount of false or misleading photos going viral on social networks quickly. Even though the image search is a reverse image search based on Google, WhatsApp has made sure that the user’s privacy is not breached. The images selected by the user for the search are not stored or accessed by the app; they are instead sent directly from the application to Google for processing, without any access from WhatsApp.
